Trenchless pipe repair is two different techniques that share a goal: fix or replace an underground line without trenching its whole length. Straight Shooter Plumbing & Rooter works with both, pipe lining and pipe bursting, for Oak Ridge homes, and this page explains how each one works, what each one needs from the existing pipe, and what neither one fixes. Whether your line qualifies is decided by an inspection, not by this page. Call (865) 761-8765. $800 off qualifying trenchless work is available in Tennessee; terms apply.

    How does pipe lining work?

Trenchless pipe lining builds a new pipe inside the old one.

    1. The line is cleared and inspected, and the run to be lined is measured.
    2. A flexible liner saturated with resin is fed into the existing pipe through an access point.
    3. The liner is expanded against the inside of the old pipe and the resin is cured in place, forming a continuous, jointless pipe wall.
    4. Any branch connections along the run are reinstated so the fixtures that drain into the line still do.
    5. The result is inspected to confirm the liner seated properly.

What lining needs: a host pipe that still holds its shape, so the liner has something to form against; a path the liner can travel without being blocked by a collapse; and access at the ends of the run.

What lining does not fix: a belly. The liner follows the pipe, so a sag in the old pipe becomes a sag in the new one. If the inspection shows a belly that is causing the problem, correcting it means excavation at that point.

    How does pipe bursting work?

Trenchless pipe bursting replaces the old pipe along its own path.

    1. Access pits are opened at each end of the run.
    2. A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe from one pit to the other, fracturing the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil.
    3. A new pipe, attached behind the head, is pulled into the space the old pipe occupied.
    4. The new pipe is connected at each end and inspected.

What bursting needs: a path the head can be pulled along, access pits at the ends, and clearance from nearby utilities or structures that the outward fracturing could affect.

What bursting does not fix: a belly, for the same reason; the new pipe follows the old path. It also is not the answer when something in the path cannot be disturbed.

    Which one fits which pipe?

Condition found by the camera Likely approach
Cracks, root entry, deterioration; pipe holds its shape Lining
Pipe too deformed or collapsed to line; needs outright replacement Bursting, if the path is clear
Belly causing the problem Excavation at the belly; the rest may still be lined or burst
Collapse with no clear path, or impractical access Conventional excavation
Localized single defect in otherwise sound pipe Spot repair; see sewer repair

The right column comes from the left column. The inspection fills in the left column; nothing is chosen before it.

If that describes your Oak Ridge line, call (865) 761-8765 or book online to have it inspected. $800 off qualifying trenchless work is available in Tennessee.

What has to happen before either method?

    • Clearing, if the line is blocked, so the camera can see; drain cleaning in Oak Ridge and the inspection are often one visit.
    • Camera inspection and locating, which establishes condition, path, depth, and the position of branch connections. If you already have this from sewer repair in Oak Ridge, it carries over.
    • Access planning: where the pits go, how large, and what is above them. You are shown this before approving anything. Trenchless means reduced excavation; the pits are real.
    • An estimate, free during normal business hours, with the method, the reasons, and the price.

What goes wrong when the method is chosen before the inspection?

Lining over a belly preserves the belly. Lining a pipe that has lost its shape risks a liner that does not seat. Bursting toward a utility or a foundation creates a new problem. Each is a decision made from a preference rather than from the pipe, and each is avoidable.

Frequently asked questions about trenchless pipe repair in Oak Ridge

    • Can just part of the line be lined?

In some cases a section can be addressed rather than the full run, depending on where the damage is and how the line is accessed. The inspection determines whether that is practical for your line.

    • Does a liner make the pipe smaller?

The liner takes up some of the old pipe's interior, so the new diameter is slightly smaller. The new wall is smooth and jointless, which affects how the line flows; the technician explains what that means for your run.

    • What happens to the branch lines that connect into the sewer?

After lining, the connections are reinstated so the fixtures draining into that run still do. Their positions are recorded during the inspection for that purpose.

    • Is trenchless completely dig-free?

No. Access pits are opened at the ends of the run, and sometimes at a problem point such as a belly. The amount of digging is much smaller than a trench, but it is not zero.

    • Which qualifies for the $800 offer, lining or bursting?

The offer applies to qualifying trenchless work in Tennessee. Qualification is confirmed after the inspection, when the method and scope are known. Terms apply.

    • What if neither method fits my line?

Then conventional excavation is recommended, at least at the problem section, and you are told why. The inspection exists to give an honest answer, including that one.

Dakota was very professional and worked quickly but fixed three toilets that had been “fixed” by three other plumbers who just made things worse. Very pleased with the work.
